How to Measure for a Belt
Every belt I make is cut to order, so the size you give me is the size you get. It takes about thirty seconds to get it right, and there are two ways to do it.
The easy way — copy a belt you already wear
This is the most accurate method, and it takes one measurement.
- Pick a belt you already own and actually wear — one that fits the way you like it.
- Lay it flat on a table, buckle end on the left.
- Start the tape at the fold — the point where the leather bends around the buckle bar. Not the tip of the buckle.
- Measure to the hole you use.
That number, in inches, is your belt size. Round up to the next even number and order that.
No belt to copy? Measure yourself
- Put on the trousers or jeans you would wear this belt with.
- Wrap a soft tape around your waist exactly where the belt sits — through the loops, over the waistband.
- Keep the tape flat and snug, but do not pull it tight.
- Read the number where the tape meets itself, and round up to the next even number.
No tape measure? A piece of string works. Wrap it the same way, mark where it overlaps with a pen, then lay it flat against a ruler.
Do not use your jeans size
This is the mistake that costs people a belt. The number on a pair of jeans is a label, not a measurement — and even when it is accurate, the belt has to go around the trousers, not around you. A belt bought at your jeans size usually comes up one to two inches short.
If the jeans tag is all you have to go on, add two inches to it and order that. Then check it against one of the two methods above when you get the chance.
Sizes I make
28" · 30" · 32" · 34" · 36" · 38" · 40" · 42" · 44"
Each size is measured from the buckle fold to the centre hole, and every belt gets a run of adjustment holes an inch apart either side of it. So your measurement does not have to be perfect — it just has to land close. There is room to move as the seasons and the winter coat come and go.
Between sizes?
Go up. A belt with a spare inch is a belt you can still wear next year. A belt an inch short is firewood.
Off the chart?
I cut every strap myself, so there is no real limit. Put your measurement in the order notes and I will make it to fit — larger or smaller than anything on the list.
Width, and the buckle
Every strap is cut 1½ inches wide — the standard width — so any western buckle will fit it, including a show or trophy buckle you already own.
The buckle is sold separately. What you order here is the strap. Pick a buckle to go with it and it arrives fitted and ready to wear; fit your own and I will finish the belt end to suit it — just say so in the order notes.
Made at the ranch
Every belt is cut, punched, stitched, burnished and finished by hand on my own bench at Double C Ranch. I take five orders at a time so nothing gets rushed. Allow up to two weeks before it ships.
